Modify Speed RPM Motor by Temperature with VFD ABB and PLC Logo!

One of the challenges in automation is learn to use Variable Frecuency Drive and PLCs in a process Control, now we gonna to Measure Temperature °C and depending the value gonna modify Speed (RPM) in a Pump or Motor, a very nice challenge to learn complex engineering!

First, We must to know these concepts:

Variable Frecuency Drive: Will work with VFD ABB, an excellent VFD with a friendly configurations, to learn all details how use VFD ABB visit Learn first time VFD ABB

PLC Logo!: Will work with a PLC Logo! Siemens great PLC and good technical features, good price, and the most important is enough to this project, has all features for a succefull project

RTD Module Logo!: For Meaasure Temperature (oor better option) is measuring temperature by Thermocouples or PT100, you must have an additional Module RTD, in this case AM2 RTD Logo!, PLC Logo Siemens may measure Maximum 200° Celsius

Thermocouple or PT100: The sensor will use to measure temperature in the process, PT100 is a Sensor Thermocouple

PASO 1 : NECESSARY ELEMENTS

The first is vey important know all elements and hardware

First we must to know all elements before to connect and configure:

PLC Logo! Siemens Relay Outputs
Module AM2 RTD Temperature Logo!
Variable Frecuency Drive ABB ACS150 (in this case)
Three-Phase Motor 380-400 Volts
Logo Soft Comfort! (verify if is installed)
Switching Power Supplt 220VAC / 24 VDC
Wiring correctly Power and Control
User Manual VFD ABB

PASO 2: WIRE AND CONNECTIONS

Wiring and Connecting is very important for this project

The right connections are:

Now is very imporant understand how the wire is connecting, very important understand

24+: Internal Switching Power Supply that gives VFD to Control, when you close +24 into VFD you can use Digital Inputs of VFD DI1-DI3-DI4

Q1-Q2-Q3: Remember here we use "Relay Outputs" in PLC Logo!, the common in inputs used in Logo are connected from +24 of the VFD

DI1 of VDF Main Start-Stop of VFD; if is not energized VFD won't work

DI3-DI4: These Terminal Blocks are connected from Q2-Q3 from PLC, then let's configure these Inputs and will understand more!

Thermocouple or PT100: Thermocouple is connecting directly to PLC; easy way to configure and wire temperature

VFD Power Terminals: These Terminals have simple connection, 380-400 Input Vols (3 Phases) + Ground ; then these Three-Phase are connect directly in Motor, to no have technical problems not connect other load after VFD Output

PASO 3: CONFIGURING VFD

Let's configure 2 temperatures in PLC to use in VFD

First we must to do is configure all parameters of the Motor Frecuency, Voltage, Current y RPM Motor, too you can add POWER (KW) in 9907

One of the most important things in a VFD is configure SPEEDS, this process you can only configure since VFD:

SPEED 1 => 1202 => 5 HZ
SPEED 2 => 1203 => 25 HZ
In PLC we create a START-OFF that will activate or not the DI1 (Start-OFF VFD)

Now we have a right wiring and connections, configurating in VFD and we are sure the process is OK, Let's to programming the PLC Logo Siemens

PASO 4: Programming PLC Logo!

Last step to start this complex Project is Programming PLC Logo

Let's go to the Software Logo Sof Comfort and select the follow blocks

Identify follow block:

Analog Amplifier: This block give us other more references how Analog Inputs are measuring
Analog Threshold Trigger: Here we scale Temperature and create the important "ON - OFF" that means when the Output is activating depending the Temperature
Digital Outputs "Q": Final Digital Outputs in the PLC "Q" and goes directly to "DI" the Inputs in VFD
Digital Inputs "I": In this case is simple will use to start or stop the automatic process, we consider a simple START in "I1" and a STOP in "I2"; in a automatic proces never is a bad idea have the control by manual process too
FLAGS "M": Flags are always used as Auxiliar contact in the process; ALL the great process in a PLC Logo use FLAGS "M"

Let's create a process that when the TEMPERATURE is higher than >50° Celsius will work in 5HZ; and when is lower to < 48°Celsius will work to 25HZ; that were the parameters 1202 and 1203 that we configured in VFD in before step, configure in the blocks "PT100"

Have important considerations

Only for this project we will use the example in 5HZ between temperature 50 and 60 °C; se entiende que sobre este valor el motor estará detenido en "0" HZ
By Thermodinac Law, if we are using pump or Motor to 25 HZ and then 5 HZ; to heat any process, the 5 HZ means "keep" the temperature, in 25 HZ it ups and 5 HZ keep it in same value
Why we are configuring 48 and 50.... and 49? In that moment we reach "Energy Eficciency" and in this moment the temperature is if incrementing with a motor in 0 the curve keep in increasing (Thermodinamic) and in other process if this temperature is "falling" from higher to down, in "0" the motor the themperature will dicrease

Take Note, when you programmation is very extensive (better sometimes), go to menu and select "Vertical or Horizontal"

PASO 5: Start the Project

This is the moment when the complex project are starting!

For this example will work with 2 differents temperatures, one temperature lower than <48°C and other higher than >50°C, remember we have a Start/Stop in case to stop the automatic process; maintenance, review or for other reason

Why Can't Start or Cant's turn ON my VDF?
The VFD is an advanced electronic device capable to disconnect for external failures in the Line, Main fails are:
- One Phase Out Input (In Three-phase System)
- One Phase Output or bad connected in Motor
- Braking Motor by Mechanical or Magnetic Brake
- Not Ground Connected, Ground is so important for safe in electrical installation

Why Can't Connect with my PLC Logo?
The Communication with PLC Logo! is by ETHERNET (TCP/IP); you should change your Sub-network number in your computer, remember Logo! comes with 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x must to try with both options, remember review IP in Logo NETWORK => IP ADDRESS
